How It All Began

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, my morning consisted of reading the daily comics printed in the Washington Post while consuming my complete breakfast such as pop tarts or Cheerios involving bananas. After returning home from school avoiding the neighborhood bully, I quickly would sift through the afternoon newspaper and hightail to the nearest toilet. Although I would read the comics in some sort of sensible pattern, I had my favorites such as Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, and For Better or for Worse. I knew at some point I wanted to be a cartoonist so I trained day and night to become who I am. You might think I mean by practicing my drawing skills or maybe even my humor skills. This is not true at all.

My desperation for friends and a girlfriend. My poor grades. My lack of skills in the sports. Giving up on other things I sucked at. These are things that brought me closer to realizing my dream of being a cartoonist. I did poorly in school since I found it quite boring. I tried. I really really tried but we didn't really have the means to deal with ADD, which is either something that I've been told I have or is an excuse to sit and draw things on my looseleaf paper while my math teacher rambles on about variables, numerators, denominators and whatever else.

My papers would be returned to me with poorer and poorer grades but with doodles that have improved with time.

And this is how I got into drawing comics...oh and plenty of hours playing Nintendo.
